Co-Founder and President, Mia’s Children Romania
Mia Scarlat began Mia’s Children with Joan Castle in 1998. After working in education, Mia had seen many children in need, but did not know how to help them. After her long visit to the United States, she finally had a way! She began working full-time with the children from her neighborhood – children from difficult families who spent a lot of time on the street.
Over the years, Mia has changed many young people’s lives through education, housing, meals, tutoring, and spiritual development, and has met many other needs that have come along. She is also a very talented painter and singer and taught herself English: skills that she now teaches to the children as well.
Mia attended the University of Bucharest, where she studied social psychology. She married Costel Scarlat in 1977, and they currently work together as the directors of Mia’s Children Romania.
